The Journey called Dying

Hi All,

One of the participants at Calgary's First Death Cafe sent me a message saying that being at the Death Cafe made him realize how little he knows about the process of dying; in particular, what can we do to help someone in that transition of life. He wondered if I could suggest some resources about this topic.

In case you're wondering the same thing, here are the titles of the books that I  have found intriguing, heart-breaking, yet definitely helpful:

 1.      Crossing Over – Narratives of Palliative Care – published by Oxford University Press

2.      Dying Well – Peace and Possibilities at the End of Life – by Ira Byock MD – everything by Ira Byock is great

3.      “I don’t know what to say…How to help and support someone who is dying” by Dr. Robert Buckman

4.      Facing Death – Embracing Life - Understanding what Dying People Want” by David Kuhl MD(2006)

5.      What Dying People Want – Practical Wisdom for the End of Life by David Kuhl (2002)

6.      All Kinds of Love – Experiencing Hospice – Jaffe and Ehrlich

You can get most of these books online or off the shelf at Self-Connection Books. Mike and Marla at Self-Connection have provided the books at the Dealing with Grief Conference for years, and are my "go-to" for resources on death, dying and grief.
